Photo and Article by Haley Pijl, The Recorder Herald

Fernwaters Charter School is bringing more music to children in the Salmon community. As part of its continuing effort to extend learning to students beyond the 4-day school week, Fernwaters is offering three group music lessons on Friday mornings from 9-12. Classes include beginning piano, intermediate piano, and violin. Fernwaters instructor Eryk Foss, assisted by his two daughters Erykah and Eilah and his mom, retired music teacher Sally Foss, teaches the classes.

“Our goal in providing this program was to give rural students in our high poverty region access to specialized musical training and an opportunity to build strong, healthy relationships while developing lifelong skills,” said Kristin Foss, Fernwaters superintendent.

Please note correction, the program is serving 30, not 17 students.

Update 12-17-2020: Since this article originally ran, the school has completely filled all seats, and purchased two additional pianos to meet the demand.
