Info Session: Alternative Certification Program For Charter Teachers

April 3, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Join us for a virtual info session to learn about Idaho’s new charter school certification program. A Zoom link will be sent following registration:

Securing excellent teachers for our students is essential to our success and it is harder today than ever.  Last year, with support from Bluum and the Idaho Charter School Network, the Legislature and Governor Little empowered charter schools to certify their own teachers in an attempt to expand the pool of quality teachers for Idaho’s public charter school students. For example, schools can now certify paraprofessional staff who have BAs, or career changers from other fields who want to become teachers.

While this law gave charter school leaders great freedom, it also came with significant responsibility to ensure that teachers certified in this way are supported with high-quality induction and ongoing professional development so that they are up to the task of teaching our children.

For the last year, Bluum has provided start-up grant support and technical assistance to Gem Prep in developing a program that will provide charters who opt into it with high-quality professional learning for teachers they wish to certify within their schools. The content is heavily-based on proven practices from Teach Like A Champion and other nationally-renowned models.

Gem Prep will operate the program that Bluum helped design, other Idaho charters will have the opportunity to have their teachers participate alongside those of Gem.

Program Details:

  • Program kicks off with a 1 Week in-person training, July 17-21.
  • Monthly 2-hour virtual trainings, 2nd Thursday 4-6 PM.
  • Schools who participate will also need to provide these teachers with “mentoring” as per the Idaho code; as part of the program, school leaders will receive training on how to meet this mandate.
  • Participants must already hold a BA or be on pace to complete one by summer 2023.
  • Tuition is $1,900 for the 1-year program
