SUMMARY:Leadership in Times of Stress: How to Put People First in the Digital World
DESCRIPTION:Entering our third year of COVID and an ever-growing world of uncertainty from the workforce to war\, leadership is harder now than ever before. One thing is certain. Leaders must be more intentional than ever\, making sure their cups are full before pouring too much into those around them. Join us May 18th\, for a discussion with nationally recognized motivational speaker\, entrepreneurial leader\, veteran\, and author\, Mike Erwin. This free event will take place in the Idaho State Capitol’s Lincoln Auditorium\, May 18\, 2022\, from 10am-12pm. \nAbout Mike Erwin\nMike Erwin is an enthusiastic\, grateful and optimistic leader who was born and raised in Syracuse\, NY.  He has dedicated his life to serving the nation and empowering people to build positive relationships—and become more resilient.  Mike lives on a 32 acre Homestead outside Fort Bragg\, North Carolina\, with his wife Genevieve and their 5 children; Eli\, Adelaide\, Therese\, Matthias and Zelie. \nMike is the founder & CEO of The Character & Leadership Center and has worked with companies including Amazon\, BD\, PWC\, and NetApp; Special Forces units; and professional sports teams including the Boston Celtics and the NJ Devils. He is co-author of Lead Yourself First (2017)\, which focuses on how solitude strengthens people’s character—and their ability to lead with clarity\, balance and conviction.  He is also co-author of Leadership is a Relationship (2021) which details why leaders who prioritize relationships are more effective. \nA 2002 graduate of The U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics\, Mike was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer\, serving in three combat tours with the First Cavalry Division and 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne). His service includes deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005—that involved the Battles of Fallujah and Najaf.  Mike also deployed to Kandahar\, Afghanistan\, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2006-2007 and 2009. He earned two Bronze Star Medals from these tours. \nFollowing his third deployment\, Mike attended the University of Michigan from 2009-2011\, where he earned a Master’s degree in positive psychology and leadership under the tutelage of the co-founder of positive psychology\, Dr. Chris Peterson.  While a graduate student\, he founded Team Red\, White & Blue (Team RWB)\, a non-profit who is forging America’s leading health and wellness community for veterans.  Mike led Team RWB until 2013 before stepping back to focus on his role as board chair.  In November 2019\, he returned to the Executive Director role where he currently leads the organization’s 232\,000 members. \nIn 2015\, Mike co-founded the Positivity Project—an organization with the mission to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships and become their best selves.  With 745 partner schools\, the organization reaches over 400\,000 children daily. He served as CEO for four years and remains involved as a strategic advisor.  Mike also serves as the founding board chair for Father Vincent Capodanno High School\, a private\, independent Catholic school outside Fort Bragg\, NC.  Community service\, character and leadership development are integral to the school’s model\, accounting for 30% of students’ GPA. \nMike continues to proudly serve the nation as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves\, assigned to the Pentagon in support of the Army Chief of Operations’ office\, led by Lieutenant General Jim Rainey. \nLearn more in his Intentional Leader Podcast episode.

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM 8/16 to 10/1\, 2021.  \nThe last 16 months have presented school leaders with unprecedented challenges.  Both technical challenges –for example\, how to arrange spaces and cohorts to meet legal requirements and keep our people safe– and adaptive challenges — for example\, how to lead staff so they strive for the best for kids while facing very real challenges themselves.  The beginning of the next school year will be no different in terms of presenting both technical challenges and adaptive leadership challenges.  This workshop will prepare school leaders to better respond to both sets of challenges by providing a framework\, and practice applying that framework\, so that they can be the best\, most emotionally intelligent leader they can be. \nThis leadership development workshop will introduce a cohesive language and universally applicable tool for building adaptive leadership as a school leader.  The Noble Story Group’s 5-Square approach operationalizes the concepts of self-awareness\, self-management\, social awareness\, and relationship management from Goleman’s (1995) work on emotional intelligence—and is grounded in personal values. SUMMARY:Parents and Teachers Speak Out on Learning During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:As part of its $22 million Communities of Excellence federal Charter School Program (CSP) grant\, Bluum promised to engage parents and stakeholders through focus groups and surveys over the 5-year grant term. \nTo lead this work we contracted with the highly-respected FDR Group to give “voice to the stakeholders and communities where charter schools have opened or expanded under the CSP grant.” We wanted to know things like how did the school leaders hold up according to teachers? Will parents be bringing their kids back next year? Have teachers been so overwhelmed that they’re leaving the profession? Are kids learning? \nBetween March 31 and May 4\, 2021\, the FDR Group surveyed 322 teachers and 1\,489 parents across 12 CSP funded public charter schools in Idaho. Collectively\, these schools enrolled 6\,177 students in 2021\, and they are located across the state in rural\, suburban and urban communities. \nAs both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years were impacted by COVID-19\, and subsequent school closures\, the finding for this period include questions around COVID-19 and the response of the schools to it. \nJoin us for an in-depth look at the findings from the FDR Group\, some of which include: \n\nAbout a quarter of parents think the pandemic has had a major impact on their child’s emotional well-being and most think there would be at least a moderate benefit to some counseling.\n75% of parents report that “My child is far more likely to lose focus when learning virtually.”\n61% of parents say that when COVID-19 subsides\, “it would be best for schools to restore the policies and teaching methods of the past as quickly as possible;” only 26% say “it would be best for schools to keep many of the new policies and teaching methods they adopted during the pandemic.”\nAmong those who taught virtually this year\, 49% described the professional development that was provided by their school on teaching in a virtual environment as a “crash course\,” 36% described it as “thorough\, with ongoing support and resources throughout the school year.”\nAbout one in three teachers think a summer school program to help students who need to catch up on lost learning due to COVID-19 is “critically needed” (35%); 45% say “it would be nice to offer\,” but not “critical\,” and 13% say “it would be nice to offer\, but not critical\,” and 13% say “it is unnecessary.”\nJust 42% of teachers agree with the statement\, “Too many of my students will have a hard time catching up when things get back to normal” (10% agree strongly\, 32% agree somewhat).\n\n \n\nABOUT FDR GROUP\nOver the last seven years the FDR Group has conducted more than 15 focus groups with parents and community members\, as well as dozens of individual interviews with charter school leaders and other community leaders across Idaho. Their work extends beyond Bluum in Idaho to include working with Idaho Ed News on their “People’s Perspective” and the “Parents Perspective.” The FDR Group has also worked with the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation on a variety of projects. \n

She is a Certified EMDR therapist and approved consultant who specializes in treating sexual abuse and facilitating the protective parenting classes for SANE Solutions. Angie is also the clinical supervisor for the School Based Therapist Program for Terry Reilly Health Services. Outside of Terry Reilly\, Angie works with Boise State University’s Graduate Counselor Education Program teaching as an adjunct and providing live-supervision to practicum students. \nBrian Armes\, Idaho Office of School Safety and Security\nBrian has served as the program manager of the Idaho Office of School Safety and Security since 2016. He is a licensed Restorative Practice Trainer. He has his Masters in Education focused on Special Education and is currently working on his Educational Doctorate for Education Leadership focusing on how teacher to student relationships affect discipline outcomes. He is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and has been a very active in Canyon County serving students and their families. \nJim Sawyer\, Security Director Seattle Children’s Hospital\nJim Sawyer has been a Crime Prevention and Personal Safety presenter for over 30 years.  He is a certified instructor in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention\, a member and presenter with Homeland Security\, President and Past President with the Washington State Crime Prevention Association\, and board member with this association for over 20 years.  He is also certified as a Nat’l Crime Prevention Specialist with the National Crime Prevention Association.  Jim instructs ongoing classes for Seattle Children’s staff on Workplace Violence\, Personal Safety\, and began an in-house self defense course for women.  Jim has also taught classes on verbal de-escalation throughout the region for hospitals\, schools\, seminars and businesses. Jim has spent over 30 years working in Security Services at Seattle Children’s Hospital and has a Bachelor degree in Society in Justice. \nJill Brown\, Generation Text Online\nJill is internationally recognized for her work and commitment to addressing the mental health and wellness of adolescents and young adults. She is the President and Founder of Generation Text Online. Jill’s vision is to equip universities and colleges\, K-12 schools\, sports organizations/clubs\, youth organizations and families on an international level with the necessary support system for the psychological\, social and emotional well-being of today’s youth\, adolescents and young adults. Jill assembled a team of experts in their fields – doctors and pediatricians\, neuroscientists\, psychologists\, psychiatrists\, social workers\, educators\, and mental health professionals to develop a 21st Century Social and Emotional Framework and a Mental Health and Wellness curriculum. This framework and curriculum are being used around the world to support young people in academic success\, provide them with life skills\, and prepare them for the workforce in a global economy. \nJon Munn\nJon has over 10 years of experience in social work. He is a licensed Restorative Practices Trainer. He currently serves as the Vice President of the School Social Work Association of Idaho. He is on the United Way of Treasure Valley’s Education Vision Counsel. He also serves as a board member for the Gates of Hope organization serving refugee families across the Treasure Valley. He has led pioneering efforts to bring trauma care and restorative justice to the Nampa School District and is proud that Union High School was the first school in the Treasure Valley to initiate comprehensive trauma informed care and restorative practices. \nKat Armstrong\nKat Armstrong has worked for the Nampa School District for 18 years\, 13 years with the Alpha One Suspension program\, focusing on behavior modification with at risk students and the last 5 years at Union High School as the Learning Through Internship Coordinator. She is a licensed Restorative Practices Trainer and always excited to share with others about Restorative Practice and how it has transformed Union High School and its culture. Kat Armstrong attended College University of New York and obtained her B.A from University of Utah in Human Development FCS and holds CDAC licenses in drug and alcohol treatment. \nNina Dowdy\, LMSW-34859\nNina is a licensed master social worker clinician in the state of Idaho.  Nina has an undergraduate degree in design from Brigham Young University with a minor in Spanish and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Boise State University.  Nina works with children\, teens\, and adults\, providing mental health therapy in English and Spanish.  She has also previously worked with victims of sexual abuse and is a trained EMDR therapist. As part of this work he directs the Colorado Association of Charter School Authorizers. He previously led the National Charter School Resource Center and directed policy\, research\, and technical assistance initiatives for the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA).  He also served on NACSA’s Board of Directors from 2007 to 2009.Additionally\, Alex chaired the board of the state-wide charter authorizer in Colorado; directed research and policy development for the Colorado Children’s Campaign; led national activities for the U.S. Department of Education’s Charter Schools Program; and directed charter school and school choice work for the Education Commission of the States. \nChris E. Yorgason\nAn Idaho attorney\, Chris Yorgason’s practice focuses on municipal government\, education\, charter schools\, real estate and general business. Chris attended Brigham Young University where he graduated in 1995 with a double major in political science and finance\, with an international emphasis. In 1998\, Chris graduated from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University\, where he was a member of the Moot Court Board of Advocates and a member of the team that competed in the Willem Vis International Moot Arbitration competition in Vienna\, Austria.  During law school\, he externed with the Honorable Larry M. Boyle (US Federal District Court of Idaho) and after law school he clerked for the Honorable D. Duff McKee (Ada County Fourth Judicial District). \nChris is a member of the Idaho Bar Association and its Government\, Real Estate and Alternative Dispute Resolution sections. He is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Idaho. Chris has served as a member of the board of directors of the Congressional Award Council of Idaho and Serve Idaho\, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism. He is currently serving as a board member of the Cantus Youth Choirs and is the president of the Idaho Mediation Association. \nTerry Ryan\nTerry Ryan is CEO of Bluum and Board Chair of the Idaho Charter School Network. Ryan is responsible for leading Idaho’s effort to double the number of students in Idaho high-performing public charter schools. Ryan leads Idaho’s federal Charter School Program (CSP) grant of $17.1 million. \nRyan served as Vice-President for Ohio Programs and Policy at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute for twelve years from 2001 to 2013. He began his career in education as a teacher in Poland and worked with the Polish Ministry of Education and the Foundation for Education for Democracy on education policy and civic education. In the 1990s\, he served as research director for the UK-based 21st Century Learning Initiative. \nHe is a member of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools Policy Advisory Council\, and served as a Commissioner for the CAEP Commission on Standards and Performance.
